The 1999 Camaro SS

Camaro SS.The 1999Camaro SS is on its way, and is bringing some new optional styling queues with it. We were fortunate enough to be the first enthusiats outside of SLP to attend a promotional photo shoot, and here's what we observed.

First of all, the look that everyone loves about the Camaro SS is still standard on the SLP package. The aggressive hood with functional ram-air still remains, as well as the uplevel spoiler with LED third-eye brake lights. For 1999 SLP will offer two exciting new options that will be shipped from SLP direct to the ordering dealership. Those options are then installed by the dealer and are fully warranted by SLP. Here we got a chance to see these two exiting new options.

Coming at you, the Camaro SS with SLP's new high-gloss grill looks radically different. Instead of the standard black plastic insert, SLP's version offers aggressive open ports on the right and left sides of the grill. It also has the SS logo boldly positioned in the center, letting the world know you are driving a mighty '99 Camaro SS.

Another new optional feature of the SS is the rear of the car, which is more than likely the part of the car you will see the most. A new version of SLP's exhaust has four exhaust tips, all positioned in the center directly under the car. This gives the SS a completely different look from all other Chevy Camaros currently on the road. On both sides of the exhaust tips are rear fascia pieces that allow the exhaust tips to seamlessly integrate with the rest of the car. The fascia pieces wrap around the rear pan and head toward the rear wheels. We think that the new body pieces finish out the rear of the car a little more. There is still the distinctive and familiar rumble to the exhaust, which adds 10 horsepower to the car. Total everything up, and the new Camaro SS with SLP's dealer-direct exhaust has a total of 330 horsepower. Quite impressive for a car that you can buy right off the showroom floor with both warranty protection from GM and SLP.

There is also good news for registered 1998 Camaro SS owners. If you are one of the lucky ones to own a '98 SS, SLP's grill and rear exhaust treatment can be ordered and installed on your car at any Chevrolet dealership. Don't forget, the options descibed above are only available direct from SLP to the dealer. Production of the grill is slated to begin in September, with the exhaust following shortly. SLP's optional dual-dual exhaust is still available for those who still want a traditional look to their '98 or '99 SS.

In short the Camaro SS continues to remain awe-inspiring year after year. SLP has always done a fantastic job of making the SS powerful and attractive and continues to do so with the new 1999 Camaro SS.

1998 Chevy Camaro Z28

Chevy Camaro. Here is the 1998 Chevy Camaro Z28.

A glance from the back would make you think it was a '97 Chevy Camaro Z28 as the rear of the car is unchanged from that year's model. However, if you move around to the front, you will see the flush-mounted headlights, enlarged grill and relocated driving lamps.

Let's take a closer look. Ram-air? Unfortunately no, but the two inlets that bring fresh air into the new LS1 motor appear to be a less restrictive than previous models. As you can see, the headlight system consists of a large capsule divided into two compartments. The fog lights are small projection-style and are embedded deep into the lower corners of the front fascia.

Under the hood lies the powerful LS1. It seems as though it is slightly easier to work on than the previous Z28 with the LT1 engine. Performance-minded enthusiasts take note: the spark plugs are a little easier to reach due to the design of LS1's exhaust manifold, and the fuel pressure regulator has been relocated so it is not as far under the windshield cowl than on the LT1.

The puzzles are the two chambers on both sides of the intake that are right behind the radiator shroud and just before the air intake. There is no visible reason for the presence of these chambers, .It seems to reduce incoming air noise.

Chevy Camaro :The Journey

Chevy Camaro :The Journey

Chevy Camaro : First Generation

Chevy Camaro. The first-generation Chevy Camaro debuted in September 1966, for the 1967 model year, up to 1969 on a brand new rear-wheel drive GM F-body platform and would be available as a 2-door, 2+2 seating, coupe or convertible with a choice of inline-6 and 302 cu in (4.9 L), 327 cu in (5.4 L), 350 cu in (5.7 L), or 396 cu in (6.5 L) V8 powerplants. Concerned with the runaway success of the Ford Mustang, Chevrolet executives realized that their compact sporty car, the Corvair, would not be able to generate the sales volume of the Mustang due to its radical rear-engine design, as well as declining sales, partly due to bad publicity from Ralph Nader's book, Unsafe at Any Speed. Therefore, the Chevy Camaro was touted as having the same conventional rear-drive, front-engine configuration as Mustang and Chevy II. In addition, the Chevy Camaro was designed to fit a variety of power plants in the engine bay. The first-generation Chevy Camaro would last until the 1969 model year and would eventually inspire the design of the new retro fifth-generation Chevy Camaro.

Chevy Camaro : Second Generation

Chevy Camaro. The second-generation Chevy Camaro introduced to market in February 1970, the second-generation Chevy Camaro would be in production for a total of 11 years. The car grew somewhat larger and wider with the new styling, thus resulting in a heavier car. Still based on the F-body platform, the new Chevy Camaro was engineered much like its predecessor in that it still used a unibody structure with a front subframe, leaf springs in the back and A-arms up front for suspension. The second-generation Chevy Camaro would see major changes in both styling and performance as time progressed from the introduction through the end of second-generation production in 1981.

Chevy Camaro : Third generation

Chevy Camaro. The third-generation Chevy Camaro was introduced for the 1982 model year. It continued to use General Motors' F-body platform and would produce a "20th Anniversary Commemorative Edition" for 1987 and a "25th Anniversary Heritage Edition" for 1992. These were also the first Chevy Camaro with throttle body fuel injection, Turbo-Hydramatic 700R4 four-speed automatic transmissions, five-speed manual transmissions, 15 inch or 16-inch wheels, hatchback bodies, and a rear window third brake light. It was during the third generation that the famous IROC-Z Chevy Camaro (International Race Of Champions) was available, which included upgrades such as Performance Suspension and 16-inch Z rated tires. The third-generation Chevy Camaro would continue through the 1992 model year.

Chevy Camaro : Fourth generation

Chevy Camaro. The fourth-generation Chevy Camaro debuted for the 1993 model year on an updated F-body platform. It would retain the same characteristics since the first-generation Chevy Camaro's introduction back in 1967; 2-doors, 2+2 seating, available as a coupĂ© (with optional T-top roof) or convertible (with the latter introduced in 1994), rear-wheel drive, and a choice of V6 and V8 powerplants. The fourth-generation Chevy Camaro Options included the 3.4 L (207 cu in) 160 hp (119 kW) V6 (changed to 3.8 L (232 cu in) 200 hp (149 kW) V6 in mid-1995) and the LT1 V8 engine (351 ci) that had been introduced in the Corvette one year earlier, as well as an optional six-speed manual transmission. The 1997 Chevy Camaro model year introduced a newer interior, while the 1998 Chevy Camaro model year was refreshed and revised with both exterior and engine changes. The engine was replaced with GM's all-aluminum LS1 (346 ci) which had been introduced with the Corvette C5. The fourth-generation Chevy Camaro would last up through the 2002 model year, marking 35 years of continuous production. Production of the Chevy Camaro’s F-Body platform was stopped due to slow sales, a deteriorated sports coupe market, and plant overcapacity.

Chevy Camaro : Fifth generation

Chevy Camaro. On 9 January 2006, the first official word regarding a fifth-generation Chevy Camaro from General Motors came at the 2006 North American International Auto Show, where the 2006 Chevy Camaro Concept was released. The concept is powered by the 400 hp (298 kW) LS2 V8 and equipped with the T-56 six-speed manual transmission. GM also showed the 2007 Chevy Camaro Convertible Concept on 6 January, 2007 at the 2007 North American International Auto Show. The fifth generation Chevy Camaro was approved for production on 5 August, 2006. It is expected to go into production at Oshawa Car Assembly in February 2009 to be sold in spring of 2009 as a 2010 model year vehicle. Both V6 and V8 engines will be available along with automatic and manual transmissions. Pricing has not been officially announced yet, however, GM has stated that it will be competitive with the Ford Mustang.
